History

On September 18, 1872, a group of pioneering women from Syracuse University founded Alpha Phi.   These women challenged the largely male-dominated university standard in a valiant endeavor to create a circle of friendship that would transcend a lifetime.  These innovative women, the Original Ten founders of Alpha Phi, were among the first nineteen women admitted to the university.

The Original Ten yearned for friends who could sympathize with each other’s troubles and support each others’ ambitions.  The bond in which they sought to achieve was a relationship so deep that is could only truly be described as one of a sister.  Through these brave women’s efforts, Alpha Phi was born.

Today, Alpha Phi continues to provide a "tie which unites, a circle of friends" for women young and old all around the world. From hand to hand and heart to heart, we are all grateful and proud of the legacy left to us by our founders.
